RHINELANDER – Marshfield’s No. 3 singles player Sonia Dissanayaka won a pair of matches at the WIAA Division 1 girls tennis subsectional on Monday at Rhinelander High School and will advance to Wednesday’s sectional tournament.
Those reaching the semifinals in No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, and making it to the finals in all other flights, move on to the Division 1 sectional meet Wednesday at the Menard Tennis Center in Eau Claire.
Dissanayaka reached the No. 3 singles finals with a pair of straight-set wins over Chloe Belant of Merrill and Addison Jandrain of Stevens Point. She will take on Wausau West’s Ruby Edmundson at the sectional.
Only players in the top two singles and doubles flights are eligible to qualify for the WIAA State Individual Girls Tennis Tournament, which will be held Oct. 13-15 in Madison.
All of the other Marshfield entries were eliminated from the postseason.
Lucy Luedtke at No. 2 singles, Payton Koran at No. 4 singles and the No. 2 doubles team of Sophia Morrell and Ava Paape all won one match for Marshfield before losing and being eliminated.
