MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic soccer team is Central Wisconsin Conference champions again after a 7-2 victory over Wausau Newman Catholic in its regular-season finale Monday at Griese Park.
Charlie Moore scored twice and five others added goals for the Dons, who finish the regular season with a 13-3 record and an 8-2 mark, is two points ahead of Amherst for first place in the conference. Amherst needs to defeat Newman Catholic on Thursday to forge a tie with Columbus for the CWC championship. Columbus has now won or shared the CWC title in six-straight seasons.
Moore scored just 2:38 into the game, and after Newman tied it in the 27th minute on a score by Noah Martin, Columbus Catholic pulled ahead on goals by Cy Becker and Alex Edwards.
Luis Sandoval added a goal for the Cardinals just before halftime on a penalty kick, but that would be it as Columbus Catholic dominated the second half.
Grant Olson, Cade Jansen, Mason Edwards and Moore all scored in a 21-minute span of the second half as the Dons pulled away. Alex Edwards finished with four assists.
Columbus Catholic earned a No. 3 seed in its WIAA Division 4 playoff bracket and will host No. 6 Amherst at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at Griese Park. The two teams split a pair of conference matches this season.
