MARSHFIELD – Alex Edwards scored 18 minutes into the second half to break a tie game and lead the Marshfield Columbus Catholic soccer team to a 2-1 win over Amherst in a WIAA Division 4 regional semifinal Thursday at Griese Park.
Columbus Catholic (14-3) moves on to a Division 4 regional final at No. 2 seed La Crosse Aquinas (13-7-2) on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Fields for Kids in La Crosse. Aquinas defeated the Dons in the regional finals last year in Marshfield, 2-0.
Columbus and Amherst split a pair of Central Wisconsin Conference matches during the regular season and the playoff matchup was tight as well.
Ayden Kazda scored off an assist from Carlos Lopez at the 29:52 mark to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.
The Dons wasted little time to get back in it. Alex Edwards took a pass from Cade Jansen and sprinted past the Amherst defense in the middle of the field, flicking a shot over the goalkeeper to tie it at the 32:09 mark.
Both teams had scoring opportunities go by the wayside over the final eight minutes of the half and headed into the break tied at 1-1.
After a slow start to the second half, the Dons were able to strike again as Mason Edwards set up Alex for another goal at the 58:09 mark to put them on top.
Columbus Catholic’s defense shut down the Falcons the rest of the way as goalkeeper Lucas Kreklau only had to make two saves in goal for the Dons.
