MARSHFIELD – Chippewa Falls McDonell held off two late shot attempts to slip past Marshfield Columbus Catholic 61-60 in a nonconference boys basketball game between two of the top Division 5 three-ranked teams in the state.

McDonell, ranked third in this week’s Wissports.net D-5 state coaches poll, pulled out to a 59-52 lead with three minutes left before a three-point play by Lucas Kreklau kept Columbus Catholic close.

Blake Jakobi converted another three-point play for the Dons to get them to within one at 61-60 with 36 seconds left.

In the closing seconds McDonell missed free throws on two different bonus situations, but Columbus Catholic was unable to score. A 3-point attempt at the buzzer by Charlie Moore was just long as the Macks held on for the win.

Charlie Moore scored 20 points and Kreklau added 16 for the Dons.

Canan Huss poured in a game-high 29 points for McDonell (4-0).

Columbus Catholic, ranked No. 2 in Division 5, is now 3-2 after suffering its second-straight loss. The Dons return to action Tuesday for its Cloverbelt Conference East Division opener at Spencer.
