WAUSAU – Wausau East posted three goals in the first period and Marshfield couldn’t recover, losing its Wisconsin Valley Conference opener to the Lumberjacks 5-2 on Thursday at Marathon Park.
Thomas Trione scored twice as East controlled the puck for most of the game, outshooting the Tigers 45-21.
Mac Alboreo made 40 shots in goal for Marshfield, while Steve Gering saved 19 shots for the Lumberjacks (2-1).
East took a 2-0 lead behind goals by Mike Mansell and Trione.
Marshfield responded with a goal by Zac Alboreo off an assist by Tylan Schreiner and Tom Claessens, but East scored again when Zach Turner found the net with 2:54 left in the first period.
East scored twice in the second period to open up a 5-1 lead.
Schreiner scored a short-handed goal off an assist from Schuler Seyfert with 1:54 left in the second. Neither team scored in the third period as Alboreo made 18 saves for the Tigers.
Marshfield (1-3) plays at D.C. Everest on Dec. 9.
