Columbus girls basketball team wins Cloverbelt East opener

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic girls basketball team got out of its offensive funk and mounted a comeback from the free-throw line to win its Cloverbelt Conference East Division opener.

The Dons, who didn’t score more than 24 points in their first three games of the season, doubled that total in beating Augusta 48-40 on Thursday night at Columbus Catholic High School.

Trailing 33-31 heading into the fourth quarter, Columbus came back to pull off the win by making 14 of 23 free throws during the final eight minutes.

Elizabeth Manlick made four of four from the line and scored six of her game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter. Deanna Kaiser added seven points in the fourth, including making five of 11 from the free-throw line.

In all, Columbus made 25 of 50 free throws as Augusta committed 29 fouls and had three players foul out. Manlick made 10 of 16 free throws for the Dons (2-2).

Allie Nelson scored 25 of Augusta’s 40 poitns, making three 3-pointers and six of 13 from the line.

Columbus returns to action Tuesday at Gilman.
