PHILLIPS – Troy Mengel scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Stratford boys basketball team to a 48-38 win over Phillips in its season-opener Thursday at Phillips High School.
Stratford trailed 20-18 at halftime before rallying with a 15-6 third quarter to take the lead for good.
Austin Shelley added 11 points and five assists and Derek Austin had 10 points and six rebounds for the Tigers.
Stratford shot 50 percent from the field (18 of 36) and were 11 of 17 from the free-throw line in the victory.
Phillips drops to 0-2 on the season.
