Spencer boys basketball team comes up short in season-opener

AUGUSTA – Spencer made a valiant comeback, outscoring Augusta by 10 points in the fourth quarter, but came up one basket short, losing its Cloverbelt Conference East Division and season-opener to the Beavers 52-50 on Friday night at Augusta High School.

Spencer trailed 38-26 heading into the fourth quarter after Augusta (3-0, 2-0 Cloverbelt East) outscored the Rockets 13-7 in the third quarter.

The Rockets used a 24-14 run to get back in the game but couldn’t make it all the way back.

Augusta made 14 of 18 free throws, while Spencer was just 9 of 16 from the line.

Wyatt Phillips scored 18 points and Phil Ivacic added 13 for the Rockets.

Casey Reetz had 20 points and seven rebounds to lead the Beavers.

Spencer hosts Owen-Withee on Tuesday.
