MARSHFIELD – The University of Wisconsin-Marshfield/Wood County basketball teams each lost a close game to UW-Rock County on Saturday.
The Marauders men fell 64-63, while the UW-Marshfield women dropped a 77-73 decision at the Marauder Gym.
In the men’s game, the Marauders fell behind 39-30 at halftime but closed the gap with a 33-25 advantage in the second half before coming up short.
Trevor Gorman and Jake Scheppler each scored 21 points for UW-M/WC (3-3, 2-1 Wisconsin Collegiate Conference).
Rock County took a one-point lead with a free throw with 2 seconds left and a last-second tip in at the buzzer by Matt Klieforth on a three-quarter court pass from Cullen Haldeman just missed.
Paige Albrecht poured in 29 points, Karless Rosentrete had 12, and Ashley Pongratz and Kayla Fleischmann each scored 10 for the Marauders women. Pongratz grabbed a team-high 15 rebounds and Fleischmann had 13 boards in the four-point loss.
“We played hard today, unfortunately Rock got hot from the outside in the second half and we turned the ball over at crucial times,” Marshfield women’s coach Lori Galetka said. “We have to do a better job of taking care of the ball – we do that, and we win this game.”
The Marauders fall to 2-6 overall and 2-4 in the WCC.
Both teams travel to Menasha to take on UW-Fox Valley in a doubleheader on Friday. The women play at 6 p.m., with the men taking the court at 8 p.m.
