Strong second-quarter run lifts Colby over Columbus Catholic boys basketball

MARSHFIELD – Zach Zettler scored 12 of his game-high 24 points in the decisive second quarter to lead the Colby boys basketball team to a 57-50 win over Marshfield Columbus Catholic on Tuesday night at Columbus High School.

Colby used a 20-10 run in the second quarter to take a 28-19 lead at halftime. The Hornets held off a late run by Columbus led by Paul Selz.

Selz dranked three 3-pointers and scored 11 points in the fourth quarter as the Dons attempted a comeback, but fell short. Colby made 8 of 10 free throws in the final quarter to ice it, winning its season-opener. Columbus, the defending Cloverbelt Conference East Division champion, falls to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

The Dons shot a high percentage from 2-point range, making 14 of 25 (56 percent), but were just 4 of 22 from 3-point range. Selz made all four on eight attempts.

Columbus plays at Neillsville in a Cloverbelt East game on Thursday, while Colby hosts Granton in its home opener.
