MADISON – Marshfield will have four boys and one girl compete in the semifinals Friday night after each of the five won two matches on the opening day of the 2023 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament on Thursday at the Kohl Center.
Freshman Jon Sternweis, sophomores Ava Gardner and Caleb Dennee, and seniors Brett Franklin and Garrett Willuweit kept their championship hopes alive with victories on Thursday.
Sterneweis (40-12) won a pair of tight matches in the Division 1 106-pound bracket, beating Evan Gill of Burlington 6-4 and handing Logan Clausen (43-2) of Lake Geneva Badger just his second loss of the season with a 9-8 victory.
Franklin (44-8) pinned Dylan Lewandowski of Glendale Nicolet in 3:22 and Cole Reid of Muskego in 3:43 to advance to the 138-pound semifinals.
At 152 pounds, Dennee rolled to a 16-1 technical fall win over Nick Foster of New Berlin West/Eisenhower and pinned Brett Skaug of Brookfield East 28 seconds into the third period.
Willuweit became the fourth Marshfield boy to advance to the semifinals with a 4-2 win over Seth Niday of Oregon and a 2-1 overtime victory over Liam Crook of Kaukauna at 160 pounds.
In the girls tournament, Gardner (20-3) pinned Aaliyah Zamora of Osseo-Fairchild/Augusta/Fall Creek in 1:34, and then earned a 10-0 major decision over Nora LeFevre of Southern Door in the 100-pound quarterfinals.
The five will compete in Division 1 semifinals starting at 7 p.m. Friday.
Hoyt Blaskowski and Owen Griebach each won their first matches before losing in the quarterfinals for Marshifeld.
Blaskowski (47-4) defeated Oregon’s Brandon Liddle 9-3 in the 145-pound prelims before getting pinned by Corbin Ramos (47-2) of Kenosha Bradford/Reuther in 1:14. Griesbach (39-6) won his 170-pound prelminary 11-1 over Jacob Van Duser of New Berlin West/Eisenhower before losing to Judah Hammen (39-9) of Kaukauna, 16-3. Both will compete in the consolation bracket, along with teammate Adrian Kruger (37-18) at 285 pounds. Kruger lost his prelim to Troy Dietzler of Ashwaubenon by pin in 2:40.
James Clements (19-10) was the only Marshfield wrestler eliminated from the tournament on Thursday as he lost 8-3 to Ryan Rambo of Hudson in a 220-pound prelim. Rambo lost his quarterfinal match, sending Clements out of the bracket.
In Division 3 preliminaries, three Stratford wrestlers and one from Auburndale advanced to the quarterfinals, which will be held Friday morning.
Stratford’s Colin Cournoyer (39-10) defeated Jaxon Bogacz of Bonduel 5-4, and Auburndale’s Derek Godard (47-10) pinned Lincoln Beyer of Westfield by pin in 1:13 to advance at 106 pounds.
Also moving on for Stratford were Trenton Cournoyer (41-7) at 120 pounds as he downed Auburndale’s Zade Grassel (37-18), 5-2, and Ryan Becker (40-13), who won his 145-pound prelim 15-5 over Gavin Campbell of Markesan.
Stratford’s Kaleb Krummel (31-12) lost in a 152-pound preliminary to Carson Taddy of Reedsville, 2-0, and Auburndale’s Adam Dorshorst (33-17) lost 10-0 at 195 pounds to Boyceville’s Bash Nielson. Both were eliminated from the tournament.
Division 3 quarterfinals will begin at approximately 11:15 a.m. Friday. Stratford’s Carter Lueck (170) and Jackson Ormond (182), and Auburndale’s Colton Weiler (138) and Sloan Welch (51-2) all earned first-round byes into the quarters.
