WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Jase Apfelbeck and Leyton Schuett held Auburndale to six hits to lead Edgar to a narrow 4-3 win over the Eagles in the Marawood Conference South Division baseball opener for both teams Monday at Lincoln High School.
Edgar scored a run in the first inning on an RBI single from Brett Baumgartner.
The Wildcats went up 3-0 as Schuett reached on an error and scored on a passed ball, and Apfelbeck singled home a run in the third.
Auburndale (1-1 overall) cut into the deficit in the fifth inning when Caden Weinfurter led off with a double and scored on a triple by Tim Schmitt. Schmitt then came in on a throwing error on the play, making it 3-2.
Edgar tacked on a run in the sixth before Auburndale tried to rally in the seventh. Sloan Welch led off with a triple and scored when Kaden Anderson reached on an error. Anderson was stranded however, as Schuett coaxed a fly out and finished off the win for Edgar (2-0 overall) with a strikeout.
The two teams will meet again Friday at Auburndale High School. Game time is 4:45 p.m.
