WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Makayla Wirkus struck out 10 and was able to work out of seventh-inning jam to help Edgar hold off Auburndale 3-2 in the Marawood Conference South Division softball opener for both teams on Monday at Lincoln High School.
Edgar took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Morgan Streveler in the bottom of the third.
Auburndale tied it with a run in the fourth on Ashlyn Grimm’s RBI single, only to see Edgar pull back in front in the fifth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Reagan Borchardt was hit by a pitch and Ashley Erickson walked to force in two runs.
Auburndale came one run closer in the sixth on a two-RBI single by Kimmie Lundgren, and threatened to tie it in the seventh.
A pair of errors put Auburndale runners on first and second with one out before Wirkus coaxed a pop out and struck out her 10th batter of the game to finish off the victory for the Wildcats (3-1 overall).
Grimm took the loss for Auburndale (4-1 overall), striking out seven and walking six in a complete game. She also finished with two of the Eagles’ five hits.
The two teams will play again Friday at Auburndale beginning at 4:45 p.m.
