WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Abby Ongna scored 9:10 into the game and that was all the Marshfield girls soccer team needed as it shut out Wisconsin Rapids 1-0 in its Wisconsin Valley Conference opener Thursday night at Lincoln High School.
Grace Taylor assisted on the game’s only goal as Marshfield defeated Wisconsin Rapids for just the second time in program history and for the first time in 11 years.
“The girls should be proud,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. They know they can play with anyone in conference and this will propel the team to bigger and better things as the season progresses.”
Goalkeeper Payton Bremer made eight saves for Marshfield, which improves to 3-3-1 overall. Rapids is now 2-2-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Marshfield plays at Merrill on Monday.
