MARSHFIELD – Wisconsin Rapids Assumption scored five times in the third inning and was able to hold on from there, defeating Marshfield Columbus Catholic 6-3 in a nonconference baseball game Monday at Jack Hackman Field.
The Dons took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning as leadoff hitter Blake Jakobi was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a single by Mac Konieczny.
The score remained the same until the third when the Royals were able to plate five runs against Columbus Catholic starter Emmitt Konieczny.
Consecutive singles by Chase Leberg, Nick Leberg and Ron Bord loaded the bases. A fielder’s choice score one run to tie the game and Bolan Hartman followed with a two-run double to give Assumption a 3-1 lead.
After an infield single by Jack Klatt, Connor Peters doubled to score two more and make it 5-1.
Assumption tacked on a run in the fifth on another RBI double by Hartmann.
Columbus cut into the deficit in the sixth as Mac Konieczny had a single and scored on an error, and Grant Olson scored on a fielder’s choice, by Assumption (2-4) was able to get out of the jam and reliever Walker Livernash finished off the victory with a scoreless seventh.
Columbus Catholic (1-4) will play its Cloverbelt Conference East Division opener at Greenwood on Tuesday.
