Marshfield girls soccer wins at Wausau West to stay in first in WVC

WAUSAU – The Marshfield girls soccer team will be playing for its first-ever Wisconsin Valley Conference championship next week after it defeated Wausau West 2-1 in a conference matchup Thursday at West High School.

The victory keeps Marshfield in first place in the WVC standings at 7-1, one-half game ahead of D.C. Everest. The two teams will play each other Tuesday night at D.C. Everest Middle School in a winner-take-all conference title match.

Presley Franklin scored off an assist from Abby Ongna at the 35:33 mark and the Tigers took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Hayden Berger added another goal for Marshfield as Ongna set her up at the 52:13 mark.

West (5-5-1, 4-3-1 WVC) countered with a goal from Lexie White in the 57th minute, but Marshfield would hold on the rest of the way as Payton Bremer made four saves in goal for the Tigers (9-6-1 overall).

Marshfield plays a nonconference match at Tomah on Friday at 6 p.m. before heading into the WVC showdown with D.C. Everest next Tuesday. The Tigers will wrap up their regular-season schedule at Appleton West on May 25.
