Marshfield girls soccer blanks Merrill to win WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield girls soccer team scored three times in the opening 20 minutes and rolled to a 9-0 shutout of Merrill in a WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal Tuesday night at Heiting Community Stadium.

Marshfield did not allow a shot on goal in the win, controlling the ball throughout.

Marshfield (11-8-1), the No. 2 seed in its half of the Division 2 Sectional 1 bracket, will host No. 3 Reedsburg (8-10-1) in the regional championship game Saturday at Heiting Community Stadium beginning at 1 p.m.

Grace Taylor scored 1:45 into the game and Abby Ongna knocked in a header off a corner kick by Presley Franklin eight minutes later to give the Tigers a quick 2-0 lead.

An own goal by Merrill and another score by Hadlee Hall pushed Marshfield’s lead to 4-0 at the break.

Avery Weister scored twice, and Maddie Nikolai, Ongna and Taylor Kundinger added goals in the second half for Marshfield, which finished with a 22-0 advantage on shots on goal.
