LA CROSSE – Local athletes picked up a handful of medals with top-six finishes on the final day of the 2023 WIAA State Track & Field Championships on Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
Stratford sophomore Jett Schoenherr was part of two third-place finishes and Marshfield senior Michaela Dick also snagged a bronze medal by finishing third.
Schoenherr was third in the Division 3 boys 100 meters in 11.04 seconds, and teamed with Payton Glenn, Austin O’Neil and Coltan Breit to finish third in the boys 400 relay in 43.75 seconds.
Dick was third in the Division 1 girls 300-meter hurdles in 44.52 seconds.
Spencer’s boys 400 relay team finished just behind Stratford, taking fifth as the team of Johnathon Jonas, Landon Belselich, Levi Anderson and Elliott Bauer ran in 44.08 seconds to earn a state medal. The same four boys placed eighth in the 800 relay in 1:32.63.
Spencer’s Breckin Miller also picked up a medal as he tied for sixth in the Division 3 boys pole vault (12-6).
Conner Weigel won a medal in the Division 3 400 meters for Stratford, taking sixth in 51.35 seconds. He missed out in the triple jump, finishing ninth with a leap of 41 feet, 4½ inches.
Others competing for Marshfield in Division 1 competition on Saturday were: Aubri Brown in the girls discus (11th, 116-1), Luke LeMoine in the boys long jump (12th, 21-3/4), Natalie Scharenbroch in the girls 3,200 (19th, 11:52.29), and the girls 1,600 relay team of Ellie Jensen, Danielle Minsaas, Ella Allar and Dick (ninth, 4:05.43).
Stratford’s girls 3,200 relay team of Ella Heidmann, Kayla Casperson, Breleigh Skaya and Kaylie McHugh took 13th in 10:19.74, and Columbus Catholic’s lone competitor on Saturday, Cal Birkhauser, was 17th in the 800 in 2:06.40.
