MENOMONIE – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic volleyball team looks like a team to be reckoned with again this season after an impressive performance at the Menomonie Sprawl on Friday and Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-Stout.
After winning all four of their matches on Friday, the Dons went 3-2 on Saturday and finished fourth at the 40-team tournament.
On Saturday, Columbus Catholic defeated Clayton 25-9, 25-14, Stevens Point 25-23, 23-25, 15-10, and Rice Lake 12-25, 25-21, 15-12, to reach the semifinals. Coach Kat Egle said the Dons simply ran out of gas, having to play back-to-back matches with no rest and fell to Eau Claire Memorial 25-23, 25-16, in the semifinals and Chippewa Falls 25-15, 25-22, in the third-place match.
“I am so proud of this team,” Egle said. “We are playing together as a team and working on caring about our teammates more than ourselves. The girls have been coachable all weekend. We have a small, but strong group of kids and a fabulous coaching staff. Together we can do great things.”
Courtney Sommer had 35 assists, 17 kills, 34 digs, nine service aces and seven blocks to fill the stat sheet for Columbus in its five matches.
Aaliyah Krenn added 24 kills, 28 digs, eight blocks and six aces, Mattea Schlafke finished with 33 digs and 14 kills, Izzy Hoglund had 30 digs, and Alayna Egle had 25 assists and 19 digs as well for the Dons.
Columbus returns to action Sept. 7 when it hosts Stratford for a nonconference match at 7:15 p.m.
