APPLETON – Marshfield spent the entire first half in opponents’ territory and cashed in time and again.
The Tigers ran just 14 offensive plays in the first half and scored seven touchdowns en route to a 71-6 victory over an under-manned Appleton West in a Valley Football Association game Friday night at Appleton West High School.
Brooks Hinson returned a punt 55 yards for a touchdown the first time a Tigers player touched the ball and that was just the beginning.
Penalties and a fumble recovered to Ethan Richardson set up Marshfield deep in West territory on its ensuing three possessions, all which ended in touchdowns – 6- and 4-yard runs by Mason Seidl and an 18-yard run by Braden Anderson – to put Marshfield up 29-0.
The Tigers scored three more times in the second quarter after three interceptions by Donny Carolfi, Brant Freis and Caleb Dennee. Chase Robinson threw touchdown passes to Hinson and Trey Parr, and Grayden Rode added a rushing score before halftime as Marshfield went up 50-0.
Marshfield’s JV team finished off the win in the second half, scoring three touchdowns. Zach Weigel ran in from the 6 and Bryce Schade threw TD passes to Jakob Sadowska and Ben Jordan.
Knowing Appleton West’s program is suffering a downturn and are in rebuild mode, forced to play a number of freshmen and sophomores, Marshfield coach Denny Goettl said he is grateful the Tigers still have a solid program with a large number of people participating.
“There’s no sense that we’re going to start beating people like this, they know they were playing freshmen tonight,” Goettl said. “I’m feeling sorry not just for them, but for football. I want football to be great all over. I’m blessed to be where I am, we have 139 kids in the program. It’s cool for us.”
Marshfield (2-4, 2-2 Valley Football Association) plays at Wisconsin Rapids next Friday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m. The Tigers need to win two of their final three games to earn an automatic spot in the WIAA playoffs.
