MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic and Arcadia boys soccer teams met up in sectional play for the sixth time in the past eight seasons, and this time the Dons got the best of their opponent.
Charlie Moore tied the match with a goal in the 34th minute and Alex Edwards had a hat trick in the second half to push Columbus Catholic to a 4-1 victory over Arcadia in a WIAA Division 4 boys soccer sectional semifinal on Thursday at Heiting Community Stadium at Marshfield High School.
The Dons (20-4-2) were outshot 12-6, but four of their shots found the back of the next as they prevailed and advance to a Division 4 sectional final matchup against Washburn/Bayfield (15-0-2) on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Arcadia High School. Washburn/Bayfield defeated Cumberland 2-0 in the other sectional semifinal on Thursday.
Arcadia took an early lead with a goal at the 10:25 mark and the advantage held until Moore tied it for the Dons with an unassisted goal at the 33:26 mark.
Edwards, Columbus Catholic’s all-time leading scorer, put in his first goal off an assist from Cade Jansen just 2:36 into the second half, and added an unassisted score with 5:08 remaining in the game. The senior forward finished off the hat trick with a penalty kick with 3:49 left.
Lucas Kreklau made five saves in goal for the Dons.
Arcadia (13-7-2) held a 3-2 advantage in those five previous playoff matchups with Columbus Catholic, all coming in consecutive seasons from 2016-20.
Columbus Catholic will be playing for its second WIAA state tournament berth in program history, with the first and only coming in 2006.
The 2023 WIAA State Boys Soccer Tournament will be held at Uhlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee on Nov. 2-4.
