MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic volleyball team responded after a first-set loss to Athens with a resounding finish, and with it, a berth in the sectional finals.
The No. 2 seed Athens won a hard-fought first set 25-21 before the top-seeded Dons turned up their play and swept the next three, 25-12, 25-23, 25-7, to win a WIAA Division 4 girls volleyball sectional semifinal match Thursday night at a raucous Columbus Catholic High School.
Columbus Catholic will play Wonewoc-Center in a Division 4 sectional final Saturday at Cashton High School. The match will begin at 7 p.m. The winner advances to the WIAA State Girls Volleyball Tournament in Green Bay on Nov. 2-4. Columbus Catholic has never qualified for state, while Wonewoc-Center is looking for its third-straight trip.
