Marshfield nets seven top-five finishes at WIAA Division 1 girls swimming sectional

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The Marshfield girls swim team had its season come to an end at the WIAA Division 1 girls swimming sectional on Saturday at Lincoln High School.

Marshfield had seven top-five finishes but none that met the state meet qualifications. The winner of each event at the six Division 1 sectionals and the next 18 finishers in each event statewide qualify for the 2023 WIAA State Girls Swimming Championship, which will be held Saturday, Nov. 11, at Waukesha South High School.

Four of the Tigers’ top finishers missed state qualifying spots by less than one second, including Brooke Begotka, who took third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.62, just 1/100th of a second off the needed qualifying mark.

Begotka also placed third in the 100 butterfly in 1:00.24.

Marshfield also had four fourth-place finishes. Ireland Moran was fourth in the 50 freestyle (25.21) and the 100 backstroke (1:00.59), the 200 medley relay team of Moran, Begotka, Terra Risa and Ella Allar finished fourth in 1:52.92, and the 200 freestyle relay team of Risa, Allar, Shiloh Smith and Begotka took fourth in 1:44.06.

Risa added a fifth-place finish in the 200 individual medley in 2:18.90.
