LA CROSSE – Caleb Dennee won the 165-pound title as the Marshfield wrestling team finished second in the Division 1 team standings at the Bi-State Classic, which was held Friday and Saturday at the La Crosse Center.
Dennee improved to a perfect 26-0 this season as he defeated Kade Rule of Mineral Point 1-0 in the 165-pound championship match.
Hastings (Minn.) won the Division 1 team title with 205 points, with Marshfield second with 191.
The Tigers also had three other top-10 finishes in the 72-team mega tournament that highlighted many of the best teams from Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Owen Griesbach (12-2) finished second at 175 pounds for Marshfield, losing to David Malin of La Crosse Aquinas in the championship match, 7-1.
Jon Sternweis finished sixth at 120 pounds and Mason Seidl took eighth at 190 as well for Marshfield.
Auburndale had two top-three finishers as Colton Weiler placed second at 144 and Derek Godard was third at 113.
Weiler (24-1) suffered his first loss of the season in the semifinals before defeating Owen Denstad of Caldedonia/Houston (Minn.) 3-2. Godard (23-3) placed third at 113 for the Eagles.
Carter Lueck had Stratford’s top finish, taking third at 175 pounds. Lueck lost for the first time this year in the semifinals before coming back for a win in the third-place match to improve to 28-1.
Noah Lucio (215) and Trenton Cournoyer (126) each placed ninth for Stratford, which placed fourth in the Division 3 team standings. Auburndale was eighth.
Spencer/Columbus Catholic/Granton also competed at the tournament but did not have any top-12 finishes.
Two Marshfield wrestlers competed in the girls tournament on Thursday and Friday, both earning top-two finishes.
Marshfield freshman Erika Sleznikow won the 126-pound title, pinning Avery Losiewicz of Medford in the championship match in 2:39.
At 107 pounds, Marshfield junior Ava Gardner lost in the finals to Ava Peters of Pulaski, 4-0.
Auburndale’s Jasmine Hebert placed fifth at 145 pounds.
