STEVENS POINT – Caden Weinfurter made a 3-pointer with 25 seconds to go to break open a tie game and lift the Auburndale boys basketball team to a 61-58 over Stevens Point Pacelli in a nonconference matchup Thursday at Pacelli High School.
The game was tied at 56-56 before Weinfurter’s 3-pointer at the top of the key gave the Eagles (10-1) the lead.
Pacelli’s 3-point attempt to tie missed and Zack Jeidy scored inside off the rebound for the Cardinals to cut Auburndale’s lead to one with five second left. After a timeout, Pacelli fouled Evan Scholl on the inbounds pass and he calmly nailed both free throws. Pacelli’s 70-foot heave at the buzzer hit the top of the backboard, sealing Auburndale’s eighth-straight win.
Weinfurter finished with 21 points and nine rebounds, knocking down all five of his free throw attempts in the win for the Eagles. Auburndale finished 15-for-17 at the free throw line.
Kaden Anderson added 19 points and Scholl chipped in 11 for Auburndale.
Pacelli, ranked fifth in this week’s Wissports.net Division 5 state coaches poll, was playing without its top two scorers in Jayden Awe and Camden Schurk. Logan Mayer led the Cardinals (7-2) with 20 points.
Auburndale will look to make it nine in a row with a Marawood Conference crossover game Friday night at home against Chequamegon.
