Columbus Catholic girls basketball holds off Gilman

MARSHFIELD – Mattea Schlafke’s blocked shots in the closing seconds clinched a 45-44 win for the Marshfield Columbus Catholic girls basketball team over Gilman on Monday in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division contest at Columbus Catholic High School.

The game was tight throughout, with Gilman holding a 23-22 lead at halftime. The Dons eventually pulled ahead 45-40 after a Schalfke free throw with 2:50 remaining.

Columbus Catholic would not score the rest of the way, but was able to hold off the Pirates and improve to 7-6 overall and 5-2 in the Cloverbelt East.

Danielle Mann scored for Gilman with 40 seconds to go to cut the Dons’ lead to 45-44. Gilman forced a turnover with 13 seconds left and worked the ball inside where Schalfke swatted away a potential game-winning shot just before the buzzer.

Schlafke finished with 10 points and Gracie Wilczek added eight for the Dons.

Mann topped Gilman (6-8, 2-5 Cloverbelt East) with 18 points.

Columbus Catholic plays at Spencer on Friday.
