MARSHFIELD – Sam Everson hit a putback shot at the buzzer to give the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point at Marshfield men’s basketball team to a 65-63 win over Gogebic Community College in a nonconference game Monday at the Marauder Gym.

The Marauders gave up 101 points to Gogebic earlier this season, but a better defensive effort helped them stay in this one until the end.

Playing without leading scorer Owen Hanson, who was sidelined with a finger injury, the Marauders trailed 36-31 at halftime before mounting a comeback.

Prince Nde tied the game for Marshfield with a layup with 38 seconds to go.

Gogebic turned the ball over late and Nde had a breakaway. His attempt at the rim rolled off and Everson was there to put it back as time expired, give the Marauders their eighth win of the season against six losses.

Everson finished with 18 points and nine rebounds, Caleb Rucker added 10 points, and Jake Skroch ended up with 13 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for the Marauders.

Nde added nine points, seven rebounds and six assists, Brennen Peterson scored six points, Tyler Linzmeier had five and Cam Mootz four to round out the scoring for Marshfield.

Marshfield hosts UW-Oshkosh Fox Cities on Wednesday.
